the whys and hows

Why am I doing this?
I was thinking about that yesterday as I was lying around with a stomach bug.  Getting sick with something is one of my biggest derailers from a program of any type because I feel like it just throws me off my game.  I lay around being lazy, and loving being lazy, and start to wonder why I ever bother with doing any different.  Terrible, I know.  Consistency has never been a strong point of mine and that is where it really gets me.  I'm working on that though.
  • I am doing this because grasping at straws is better than not grasping at all.
  • I am doing this because it is working.
  • I am working the program because the program works, because I have seen real change with my very own eyes, and because I see results quickly even in myself.
  • I am choosing my life, not letting my life happen to me.
  • I feel good when I eat well, when I exercise, when I read my scriptures daily, when I pray daily, and when I attend the temple regularly.
  • I know all those things and have experienced their trans-formative effect and yet I still need to be reminded of it from time to time.  All I can figure is that it's a byproduct of being human.
  • I want to help people.  I feel at my best and most fulfilled when I do.  I believe people are often put in the paths of others to help them, to be someone else's answer to a prayer.  I've had so many be that for me that I can only hope I can be that for even just one other person so that I can pay it forward..... even if these things are sometimes hard to share.
  • I am doing this because I love myself, not because I hate who I am.  You don't have to dislike yourself to want to be the best version of you.
  • I want to be prepared for anything that life may throw at me.  I want to know that I have done all I can to prepare my body physically and nutritiously as well as my mind/spirit emotionally and spiritually for anything that may come in life.  If I am better prepared myself then I will not only be able to weather whatever life may bring, but I will be better equipped to help those around me, including my children.
  • I am doing this because it feels like it fits best with my personal and religious beliefs about health... slow and steady, line upon line, creates lasting and real change.  Part of my test on earth is mastery of my body that was given to me as a gift from my Heavenly Father. Moderation in all things is so very important.  Balance in all areas of life is also.  Accountability keeps us focused.  There is so much in the world to distract us from what is important and Satan is out to take the things that he most desires because he cannot have- bodies and families.
  • I want to instill good habits in my children at a young age so that they have the tools and are better equipped so that they are less likely to face these same struggles when they are adults themselves.  They already make great choices, love healthy things and exercise, and are pretty balanced kids...but there is always opportunity for teaching and improvement and for leading by example.
I really missed my regular foods and routine yesterday.  Thankfully my Shakeology settled in my system just fine or I would have been sorely missing out on any nutrients at all.  It was hard though to not get any sort of exercise. It wasn't at all that I felt guilty not doing it or that I had to.  It was just that I missed it and I was sad that my body was making it very clear that it was going to have none of it.  Thank goodness today is much better and I was able to enjoy my Burn Intervals, even getting a second wind halfway through it.  That does have to be about the fastest I have ever bounced back from food poisoning.

I'm not trying to be 'salesy' or anything... just sharing what I have seen and experienced.  I have read a lot of testimonials, even from people I personally know from my real life (don't you sometimes feel like testimonials are from 'fake' people?) about how these groups have changed their lives, how Shakeology has taken away migraines or improved ADD or inflammatory diseases (such as RA and fibromyalgia) or taken them off antidepressants entirely.  I have read much about the health benefits of various foods and believe in the power of using good food and herbs to heal and strengthen our bodies.  I was shocked when actually looking at Beachbody programs to discover how many of them were ones that friends had raved about for years and loved doing.  I never had any clue these had all been from the same company.  I knew about P90X and Insanity being 'related'.  I did not know it was also the same company behind Slim in 6 (there were a lot of Nutrisystem people doing that as their workout regime), Yoga Booty Ballet, Brazil Butt Lift, Les Mills Body Pump, Rockin Body, Turbo Jam, Turbo Fire, and more.  Did you?? Seriously, if I had known that sooner I really probably would have jumped on their products a lot sooner.  Truthfully, knowing how great the fitness programs are makes me feel a lot more confident in their other lines of products (like the Shakeology and other vitamins and skin care).

I will say, Shakeology and the other programs are expensive.  I am a total frugal shopper.  I have even taught couponing classes for years.  I love yard sales and thrift stores.  So dropping $120 for a meal replacement shake?  I don't care if it works out to $4 a meal, that's still a lot in my book.  I have really good health insurance coverage so I wasn't going to factor in the savings in medical bills that would come from improved health or fewer medications.  I did look at it this way in the end.... a month of Nutrisystem (which I'm most inclined to compare against because of my previous success with it) is roughly $280- there's a lot of options for programs but that's about the average price.  That covers most all your meals (you do need to add in some of your own food), but in the end having all your meals prepared for you doesn't force you to make those hard daily choices of choosing and preparing good foods for yourself.  It is still too convenience based to be a full lifestyle change in the long run.  That's honestly a hard thing for me to accept.  The only other program I know to be as successful (that doesn't involve some VLCD) is Weight Watchers and that is about $30/month plus there's usually a signup fee.  Then you'll have your regular food and gym membership on top of that.  Weight Watchers I believe is successful because of the support system involved in it and its encouragement of balance and realism in your diet.  Around here, a gym membership that has any kind of childcare is about $30-$40 at minimum per month.  Sometimes you have to pay an additional $2 per kid for 2 hours of care.  We won't talk about the worrying about germs there or the child care being full or your older kids being 'too old' for it but too young to work out in the actual gym without you there by their side- leaving you to not be able to do everything you want to do because they still can only use certain areas.  Not that I've encountered this before.....Where was I?  Oh... so I kind of just figured out that it was cheaper than NS, a little more than WW but with the same benefits (because in a challenge group you've got what you'd get at a WW meeting) plus the addition of having one meal replaced during the day and health benefits of some awesome superfoods that would also take care of a lot of the nutrients your body needs.  Then as far as the exercise regime goes.... well, the Beachbody programs really vary in price a lot (we're talking from $40 to $150) but a lot of them are 60-90 day programs with the variety you need to keep you from getting bored or your body from plateauing.  Compare that to the cost of the gym membership..... To me, it really does seem cheaper, especially since I do get a decent coach discount.  I have never been a fan of workout videos, or of tripping over my children while trying to do them, but I have loved every one of these that I have tried and I'm finding I really can do them at home whether my kids are around or not.  The fact that the Shakeology has genuinely been the best tasting meal replacement of any type (except maybe those NS chocolates, those were pretty darn good), has really been a happy surprise for me.

Anyway, we all have our different whys and hows of doing things.  I think it is important to consider those and to frequently reconsider them.  I always wonder how often other people think about those things or how much is just the way my brain seems to be wired to consider human behavior.  If you're going to make a change in your life, of any kind, you need to have a reason.  You need to write that reason down to make it more concrete.  If you are going to make a big change, I think you need support and the more support the better.  Change starts with a decision for something different.  It doesn't come all at once.  Sometimes it is painfully slow and gradual.  Sometimes you don't see it at first.  It frequently requires sacrifice and a breaking of your heart so that it can repair and be soft and malleable to fit the better you.  Growing pains have always hurt.  But don't they make you stand a little taller?  If you think you'd like to join a fitness challenge group and have some accountability and support, I would be happy to help you.  There is another one starting June 3 like the one I'm doing now.  If you'd like support or help of any kind, please feel free to send me a message or comment.

ns board post

I posted this on the Nutrisystem board today and wanted to share it here so that I would remember it....
Hey everyone...I just wanted to share how excited I am that my goal is in sight for me.  I've been here since Oct. 11th and have now lost 45 lbs!  My goal is just 20 (well 20.4) pounds away.  I'm just pretty excited because literally every day I have someone commenting to me and that's always kind of fun.  If you haven't taken your measurements then I encourage you to do so NOW!!! It just makes this journey so much more FUN.  I only measure my bust-waist-hips each week but I do have measurements from everything from before.  Check out my then and nows (just cuz it's kinda fun!):

BMI: 34.97...27.96!
BF % (according to my scale anyway): 42%...36.5%
arms: L=13.63 R=14.44  now BOTH are 12 (minus 4.07 total for the arms!)
thighs: L=26.25  R=26.13  now BOTH are 22! (minus 8.38 total for the thighs!!!)
calves: L=16.13 R=16.75  now both 14.5 (minus 3.88 for the calves)
chest: 45...38 (minus 7 inches!)
waist: 39...32.15 (minus 6.85 inches!)
hips: 48....39.5 (minus 8.5 inches!)
butt: 47.38....40  (minus 7.38 inches!)

for a grand total of:  45.71 inches!!! Wow! that's just over an inch per pound.  See how cool?  Go take your measurements now!  I've gotten rid of almost 20% of me just in weight.
Have a great day!

=)

update.

I have officially FINALLY lost 40+ pounds!! YAY. Apparently this is the magic number because so many people are suddenly saying things to me. My sister-in-law (who lives just down the street) said that she really didn't recognize me at church on Sunday. She thought it was someone else sitting with DH. And a lot of friends and family have asked me for more information, wanting to maybe sign up for Nutrisystem. One of my best friends just started doing it with her own food. And NS just started selling some of their lunch bars and desserts at Albertsons and I'm SOO excited!!!

The last few months have been difficult as far as weight loss goes. Times have been stressful and I haven't been vigilant in keeping track of everything and being 100%. Also, I got into the size I expected to be at my goal so a part of me felt like I was where I wanted to be and so I acted like I was on maintenance. But I guess the good news is that I did actually maintain. But now I'm back on top of things and I will be at goal by the beginning of summer- check out my ticker on my page.

Why have things been stressful? Well, I had 2 funerals in the last month. The first was my mother-in-law's mother. That was in Arizona. It was sad because I knew the two of them were close and her dad died when she was 12. I've already lost one parent...I can't imagine losing the second. The second was my best friend's dad. That was just a couple weeks ago. It's been a lot harder than I expected. It's been an eye opening experience too as I've realized how much I would turn to food when upset before. But it's also great too because I have seen how far I've come and food is no longer an emotional thing. I can find other outlets.

2 months on nutrisystem

Okay...today was weigh-in and week 8 for me so I did my tallies for 2 months. My total loss has been 19 lbs, 2% body fat (according to the scale), 3.75" in my chest, 3" in my waist, and 2" in my hips. My BMI is down to 32.59 from the 35.91 it started at.
I should be happy I know. Believe me, I am happy to have lost almost 20 pounds and to be in the 14s finally...and that they are already feeling loose. I just can't shake this 'it's not good enough'. It's a problem that I have and have really struggled with (I'm never good enough for myself). I know the loss slows after the first month but I guess I didn't expect such a difference (i.e. I lost 12.6 the first month, only 6.4 this last month). I've tried to tell myself that losing this last month was still good because of Thanksgiving, mine and DH's birthdays, vacation, and Christmas parties. I guess that's not making me feel any better because I didn't want those things to affect me and they obviously have. I have a Christmas goal that I don't feel like I'm going to make and that makes me sad (so does the fact that I was 1 lb shy of the 20 I REALLY wanted this week). I'm going to my dad's next weekend and that's never a good thing when it comes to my weight. My stepmom tries to make things that she knows I like. It is very yummy food but it is SO fattening. She makes LOTS of potatoes and uses LOTS of butter in everything (grew up on an Idaho farm). She gets offended easily (i.e. if you don't eat what she makes), so I'm nervous. I don't know what to do there except watch portions and hope for the best. I don't know how to explain what I'm doing without offending her. My family doesn't know except my little sister. I guess I just needed to get all this out there.  I'm going to be trying to focus more on lots of exercise to get me through this next month...hopefully that'll help with the holiday blues too.. =/

a month of loss.

Well...I have officially been on Nutrisystem for 4 weeks now and the time really has flown by!!  12.6 pounds are gone for good!!! I don't really look different yet but I feel so much better and lighter.  I can't wait till the end of the year when I plan to have lost 25 pounds.  This has been so easy and so worth it.  It's been a journey of self-discovery as well.  I have learned that I have never thought of myself as good enough.  For example, one week I lost 3 pounds and I was bummed that it wasn't 5.  I didn't realize what a problem this was until I started looking back at my life and realized it has hindered me from doing a lot of the things I have loved doing...like pursuing art as a lot of people have asked me about lately.  I am learning to celebrate my small accomplishments and recognize them as big ones...learning to really appreciate and love myself again.  And I am allowing myself to really FEEL emotions instead of trying to hide them or distract myself from them with food.  This is hard...and this will be a hard holiday season because of it.  There is still grief and sadness that I haven't 'walked through' over losing mom.  The book Tuesdays with Morrie helps a lot.  They recommend this book for anyone struggling to overcome an addiction of any type.
I am happier these days.  It's been 3 weeks probably since I took any Zoloft.  The dr gave me a prescription....I just have never filled it.  I don't think about it because I feel so much better.  Things are good.

1 month stats:  minus 12.6 pounds.....  -2.85 inches in the chest,  -2.15 inches in the waist...and -.5 hips (I plan to really change that one by next month!!)

in the beginning.

This is harder for me to do than you may imagine.  I'm trying to break through some problems of mine and to do that I need to own up to myself and face my reality.  This is a little attempt at doing that.  Please do not judge me.  This is the story of me and my weight:
I've never been 'thin'.  I'm curvy- some people are just built that way.  My thinnest was a year before mom died- 135 lbs I think.  We went to the gym a lot together.  Then I started dating DH (husband now) and gained weight fast- he eats all the time and thinks food should be fore pleasure.  Didn't work out as much because I was spending time with him.  Then mom died and food became a comfort.  I went to college and DH left on a mission for our church.  It was all I had.  But I met with a nutritionist about my hypoglycemia and learned how to manage that.  Mono got me started, that helped me continue..and living completely by myself for a summer allowed me to focus on myself.  I had a lot of self-discipline and lost a lot of weight on my own.  I biked the Provo River trail frequently.  My weight was up and down through school and I now that I think about it it may have had something to do with my scheduling.  But the summers I enrolled in PE and outdoor rec classes and boy was I in good shape!!  Summer before DH came home (summer 2001) I was in weight lifting and outdoor rec- did a 3 day hike even.  Was in great shape.
DH came home from his mission Feb 2002.  We got married in June and I probably weighed 145 but I felt skinny and great.  He's always complimented me tons and made me feel like I look great so that's helped.  Weight slowly crept back on.  I got pregnant a month later.  Gained 50 lbs I think.  6 mo after W was born I still wasn't losing the weight even though I was eating well and exercising frequently.  Went to the dr.  Turns out I had an EXTREMELY underactive thyroid (also why I gained so much during the pregnancy).  Started meds and started losing weight finally.  Too bad it was only a month later that I was pregnant again.  I only gained 15 lbs with the 2nd one thanks to having the thyroid in control and going on frequent walks.  People actually said I looked like I was losing weight.
THEN the emotional problems came back.  DH's addiction came up and threw me through a loop.  Caused big problems for me that still haunt me.  Since I was pregnant (with #2 at the time) and DH was moving to Vegas so we could relocate- the dr. thought it best to put me on Zoloft.  I agreed to a super-minimal dose because of his kind explanations and the fact that I met almost all of the 'risk factor' indicators.  I was more emotional with this pregnancy than the first and didn't want to take it out on W.  I still got PPD (postpartum depression)- yes, it's real and scary because it's uncontrollable.  The dr. upped my dose because of the hormones after having a baby and because I was relocating to my in-laws basement and away from my family in UT.
Oct. of last year I quit the meds.  November was hard but I did it.  December came and DH confessed to a relapse.  That's when I realized that every time I got really stressed and depressed, I gained weight.  I gained back what I'd lost after having P and having a contest with a friend.
So I've fluctuated in my weight about 5-10 lbs since.  I went to the gym a lot, had a personal trainer, counted calories and still was stuck.  Got frustrated and went for a physical hoping that I'd have bad news that would give me motivation again.  Not so.  I'm actually healthier than most.  My body fat percentage and BMI (when calculated by a trainer using weight and measurements) were actually LOW- I've always had a lot of muscle.  So, despite losing a jeans size I still got discouraged about the scale not moving and more or less gave up.  Of course it moved back up to where it was- but I still kept that new size.
I realize that I know WAY to much about addictions to let this one control me.  I've been hiding from myself in my studies of them and I'm realizing that now.  I know what it's like to break the addiction cycle and the demons you have to face.  That scares me.  But I also know it's possible.  I don't want to be depression prone the rest of my life and I think that facing this will help, even if it means delving deep into one for a little while.  I will succeed and I will triumph a new and better person for it.  My weakness will become my strength.  No more comments on how 'it's about time' or 'I'm glad you're finally doing something' or 'you could stand to lose some weight.' etc.  It hasn't been for a lack of trying.  And at least I still know that I am a good person.  I hate people that are shallow and think so much revolves around looks and sex.  That's not who you are.  I've been trying to deal with the wrong battle.
I've found something that will help me to focus on me and lose the weight finally.  I joined Nutrisystem on 10/11/05.  I haven't told anyone but DH.  It's perfect for my situation with the kids (gives me prepared foods so I don't have to cook for myself and can still eat the right portions, right stuff, and at the right time).  The dr tells me when I talk to him about my concerns about my weight that I need to be easier on myself and I underestimate how hard it is on me emotionally and physically to have two kids so young and so close together.  I'm admitting now that he's right.  I don't think it's that bad but I think I still underestimate it's toll on me.  I'm taking the time now to deal with life no matter how hard and how badly I want to run away.
The nation as a whole needs to look at food differently.  It is fuel and fuel alone.  It was meant to nourish our bodies...not give us comfort.  We shouldn't be taking in any more than our bodies need to function.
Please be supportive.
